How to Choose and Launch a Website for Your Local Business in Colombia

A business that decides to build a website almost immediately runs into a cascade of questions nobody ever explained well: do I need a landing page or a full site? How much should this cost? How long does it take? Which agency can I actually trust without getting a surprise halfway through? Most of these decisions end up getting made with incomplete information, comparing standalone prices without really understanding what’s behind each number.

This article is a general overview of the four questions that, together, determine whether launching a website ends up being a good investment or an expensive frustration. Each one gets its own dedicated deep-dive article — here’s the full map.

Landing page or full site: the first decision, and the one most often gotten wrong

Before thinking about design or price, there’s one question that shapes everything else: does the business need a single page focused on one concrete action (booking, buying, messaging on WhatsApp), or does it need a site with several sections explaining services, showing a portfolio, and telling the business’s story? Mixing these two up is probably the most expensive and most common mistake when starting out.

A poorly used landing page tries to be a full site, and a poorly used full site behaves like ten landing pages with no clear action. Neither extreme works.

A landing page makes sense when there’s a single, urgent goal: launching a product, a promotion, a new service, an ad campaign. A full site makes sense when the business already has an established offering, several services, and needs a potential customer to understand the full picture before deciding. Getting this wrong isn’t just a matter of aesthetics — it means spending the budget on the wrong structure for what the business actually needs today.

What a website in Colombia actually costs

Website prices in Colombia vary enormously — from a few hundred thousand pesos to several million — and that variation doesn’t always come down to quality. It depends on the number of sections, whether the design is custom or a generic template, whether it includes WhatsApp integration and working forms, and whether the price includes maintenance after launch or not.

The most common mistake is comparing only the final number, without understanding what each quote actually includes. Two quotes that look similar in price can mean completely different things: one might include basic SEO, the first year of hosting, and training to edit content; the other might be just the design, leaving everything else as an extra cost that shows up after signing.

How long it takes to have it ready

Delivery time is another variable where expectations tend to be out of sync with reality. A simple but well-built site, with content and photos already defined ahead of time by the client, can be ready within days. A bigger project, with multiple rounds of design revisions, content that has to be written from scratch, and more complex integrations, can take weeks.

The variable that most extends timelines usually isn’t technical — it’s the business’s own delay in delivering content, photos, and approvals. A process with clear stages and concrete dates for each deliverable (on both the client’s and the agency’s side) is what really determines whether a project meets its promised deadline or drags on indefinitely.

How to choose an agency you can actually trust

Most businesses choose an agency based on price or a quick recommendation, without checking the signals that actually matter: do they have a real, verifiable portfolio? Is the work process clear from the first contact? Does the price include what the business actually needs, or are there hidden costs that show up later? What happens if something breaks after delivery — is there support, or does the project end the day it gets paid?

A trustworthy agency isn’t necessarily the cheapest or the most expensive — it’s the one that’s transparent from the start about what’s included, how long it takes, and what happens after launch. That transparency, more than any other factor, is what separates a good investment from an expensive frustration.

One overview, four decisions

Landing page or full site, the real cost behind the price, a realistic delivery timeline, and how to choose a trustworthy agency: these four decisions, made with complete information, are what determine whether launching a website results in a digital asset that actually works, or an expense that didn’t deliver on its promise.

In the next articles on this blog, we’ll dig into each of these four decisions separately, with concrete information you can apply to the reality of a local Colombian business. Think of this article as the general map to come back to before diving into the detail of each piece.
